“Musical scores on the human body: Jacopo Baboni Schilingi’s first Japanese solo exhibition at CHANEL Nexus Hall.”
Until 16 February, Ginza’s CHANEL Nexus Hall presents Bodyscore—the soul signature, a new approach combining music and photography by contemporary musician Jacopo Baboni Schilingi. Besides orchestral, ensemble and solo composition, he has actively produced music for installations and moving images. From 2007 he experimentally began writing scores on bodies, gradually developing a new compositional method. Thirty photographs are displayed in an entirely monochrome setting.
Explaining his approach, he says: “I determine the model’s pose according to the piece I want to write. Which piece I write on which model also depends on the expressive power of that person’s body. For a dancer from New York’s Martha Graham Dance Company, I made a powerful piece called Phoenix, suited to the muscular body, and the pose also expresses that strength…”

“Jacopo Baboni Schilingi: Bodyscore—the soul signature. CHANEL Nexus Hall.”
CHANEL Nexus Hall presents a new approach combining music and photography by contemporary musician Jacopo Baboni Schilingi. Born in Italy and based in Paris, he composes orchestral, ensemble and solo music as well as music for installations and moving images. He began experimentally writing scores on human bodies in 2007, and this gradually became his new compositional method.
At a special concert at CHANEL Nexus Hall in November 2019, he paid tribute to Chanel founder Gabrielle Chanel’s spirit, combining strings and real-time electronics to create a new sound. [Part of this passage is too small to read precisely.]
Passing through the body’s medium increases the music’s expressivity. Some exhibited works play the actual music when viewers stand before them. The exhibition lets visitors experience his world across sight and hearing.
