At the heart of sound with the conservatoire

Le Pays · 16 September 2008 · documentation stamp · A. R.

For the start of its season, the conservatoire’s traditional evening will place the audience “at the heart of sound”. The event takes place today, Friday, in Montbéliard.

Following last year’s fine string concert devoted to dance music, the composition department will open this new season. The entire CAPM hall in Montbéliard will be occupied, immersing the audience in sound. Dance will also take its place, reaffirming its presence in teaching and projects.

Contemporary music

Since 1999, the Conservatoire du Pays de Montbéliard has devoted considerable energy to contemporary music and creation. The composition department offers various kinds of teaching: instrumental writing for soloist or orchestra and the writing of sound, better known as electroacoustics.

The concert showcases the work produced in this course. It presents four compositions with different characteristics: a duo for piano, percussion and amplification; an improvisation for saxophone, percussion and electronics; a piece for girls’ choir, solo voice and electronics; and a piece for percussion and electronics developing real-time musical interactivity.

All were created in Montbéliard over the past three years. They bring together digital technology—electronic instrument-making—and instruments from traditional instrument-making. The concert also takes possession of the CAPM hall, playing both with its acoustics and the spatial and theatrical possibilities of the building.

The programme includes Jacopo Baboni’s Le Château II, commissioned by the Voce festival; Giacomo [surname not legible]’s Onka for piano and percussion; an improvisation for saxophone, percussion and electronics by Lorenzo Bianchi; and Jacopo Baboni’s Décode II for percussion, dance and electronics.
