Nowadays everything is mainly digital: computers, touch interfaces, networks, sensors, interactive controllers… I felt a need to come back to the body. I developed a very specific connection I with music writing. To anchor myself firmly to this particular link, I literally reincarnated musical writing in the “here and now”, a way for me to fight against the perverse effects caused by the appearance of musical production computer programs, which have, little by little, dematerialized and disincarnated my relation to the music. Since 2007, I modified my compositional method to rediscover a “sculptural” sensibility. My choice is drastic, emphatic and powerful, as it represents – literally – a return to the body, a carnal return: my scores are henceforth not just written by hand, but also written directly onto human bodies. In my studio, converted into both a calligraphy atelier and photography studio, I collaborate with male and female models, who serve as living canvases for my compositions. For hours, I compose directly on their bodies, rediscovering the power of the present moment. I fully re-experience the compositional duration, previously wiped out by the digitization of time, and by computer aided music, far from the body. The models are naked. Their skin, which becomes the composition’s canvas, has natural roughness encountered that is taken into account by me while composing, influencing the score, as an unforeseen element to be integrated within the final result. The implications can be far-reaching. If we were in Asia, in Japan, China, Korea, they would say I write on Qi or Ci. In my own continent, Europe, I say that I write on people’s soul, on their spirit, on the living energy that we call the body.
